Bookkeeper – Maternity Cover (Southend‑On‑Sea)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Bookkeeper to provide maternity cover within our Southend‑On‑Sea office. The role involves handling a range of bookkeeping tasks for multiple clients while maintaining high standards of accuracy and service.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake bookkeeping and data entry for a variety of allocated clients.
• Complete the year‑end process, including opening/closing balances, accruals, pre‑payments, depreciation and other journal entries.
• Prepare management accounts and maintain a full audit trail.
• Submit VAT returns and set up new clients on Xero, handling conversion balances.
• Develop and maintain strong client relationships, addressing queries and ensuring service expectations are met.
• Record hours worked, monitor budgets and escalate issues for fee discussions.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years’ experience in an accountancy practice.
• Robust knowledge of double‑entry bookkeeping and accounting standards.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong time‑management, organisational abilities and capacity to work under pressure.
• AAT qualified, ACCA part‑qualified, or qualified by experience.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Xero, QuickBooks and Sage.
• Advanced use of Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Ability to prepare VAT summaries and returns.
• Understanding of PAYE bookkeeping.
• Experience with CIS submissions.
