Design & Technology Technician – School Workshop

About the role

We are looking for a Design & Technology Technician to join a secondary school in Birmingham. The role starts in September 2026 and runs on a term‑time only basis, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am‑4:00 pm. You will support the DT department by preparing practical lessons and maintaining a safe workshop environment.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare materials, tools and equipment for practical DT lessons.
• Maintain and organise workshops, classrooms and storage areas.
• Clean, maintain and safely store equipment and machinery.
• Assist teaching staff during practical sessions when required.
• Monitor stock levels and help order materials and equipment.
• Carry out routine maintenance of machinery and tools in line with health‑and‑safety guidelines.
• Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, COSHH and school procedures.
• Dispose of waste safely and keep the work area clean.
• Undertake any other duties requested by the Head of Department or School Leadership Team.

Required profile

• Previous experience in a DT technician, workshop, engineering, manufacturing or maintenance role is desirable.
• Knowledge of workshop tools, machinery and health‑and‑safety procedures.
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
• Two professional references covering the last 24 months.
• Right to work in the UK.

Required skills

• Proficiency with workshop tools and machinery.
• Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance.
• Understanding of Health & Safety and COSHH regulations.
