About the role
The Department for Transport is seeking a Director of Network and Connectivity to lead the strategic development of the UK rail network. This senior civil service position will shape infrastructure investment, improve passenger and freight connectivity, and align rail initiatives with national and regional priorities.
Key responsibilities
- Define and own the Department’s rail network strategy, ensuring alignment with Government priorities and a clear pipeline of infrastructure projects.
- Lead the rail enhancements portfolio, providing oversight, assurance and coordination across the Department, Network Rail and Great British Railways.
- Develop place‑based connectivity approaches, working with mayoral authorities and regional transport bodies.
- Set policy for international rail and trade, overseeing cross‑border assets such as HS1 and the Channel Tunnel.
- Drive data, digital and innovation initiatives across the rail network, including sponsorship of the rolling stock strategy.
Required profile
- Proven senior leadership experience within the rail or transport sector, preferably at Director level in the Senior Civil Service.
- Demonstrated ability to influence high‑level stakeholders and manage complex, multi‑agency programmes.
- Strong understanding of national and regional transport policy, infrastructure investment and international rail connectivity.
- Excellent strategic thinking, communication and decision‑making skills.
