Downstream Chromatography & Protein Purification Scientist

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Downstream Chromatography & Protein Purification Scientist to lead purification method development for mammalian‑cell‑derived proteins within our Innovate UK Canada–UK collaborative project. The role combines hands‑on laboratory work with scientific coordination of multi‑partner R&D programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and optimise chromatography‑based purification processes for recombinant proteins, including difficult targets such as growth factors and cytokines.
• Operate and analyse data from automated systems such as the Bio‑Rad NGC Quest, selecting resins, buffers and conditions to maximise yield and purity.
• Characterise purified proteins using SDS‑PAGE, Western blot, ELISA and quantitative assays, and use results to refine processes.
• Plan and manage experimental programmes to meet Innovate UK, STFC and other project milestones, and coordinate activities across academic and industrial partners.
• Maintain detailed laboratory records, prepare technical reports and present updates to project stakeholders.

Required profile

• Proven experience in protein purification and chromatography method development for mammalian‑cell expressed proteins.
• Ability to work independently, manage project timelines and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary collaborators.

Required skills

• Chromatography techniques (affinity, ion‑exchange, hydrophobic interaction, size‑exclusion).
• Operation of Bio‑Rad NGC Quest chromatography system.
• SDS‑PAGE, Western blotting, ELISA and protein quantification assays.
• Data analysis of chromatographic runs and process optimisation.
