Electrical Improver – Multi‑Skilled Maintenance Role

About the role

As a Multi‑Skilled Electrical Improver you will support a full range of electrical work, from complex repairs to minor issue resolution, and carry out test and inspection activities for the University of the West of England estate.

Key responsibilities

• Support pre‑planned maintenance of electrical equipment and systems across the UWE estate.
• Carry out reactive and remedial repairs following testing and inspections as directed by the Helpdesk.
• Plan and execute installation, testing and commissioning of electrical systems.
• Diagnose and resolve technical problems, source parts, and liaise with manufacturers for support.
• Provide detailed write‑ups and maintain operation and maintenance logs.
• Use PDAs or electronic devices to record work and ensure compliance with regulations.
• Collaborate with the control hub, working independently or as part of a team.
• Perform point‑of‑work risk assessments and uphold health and safety standards.
• Participate in out‑of‑hours on‑call rota (typically 1 in 6).

Required profile

• Minimum NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering.
• At least 3 years’ experience in building maintenance, covering planned, reactive and remedial electrical work.
• Full UK driver’s licence.
• Desirable: IOSH Working Safely or CSCS Card L8 Awareness.

• Electrical engineering knowledge (NVQ Level 2).
• Electrical maintenance and repair.

• Use of electronic devices (PDAs) for work recording.
