Freelance Outdoor Activities Instructor

About the role

Ghyll Head Outdoor Education and Activity Centre is seeking freelance instructors to deliver high‑quality outdoor experiences for schools and youth groups. Based on the shores of Windermere, you will work year‑round with diverse groups, helping young people explore the outdoors safely and confidently.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and lead activities such as canoeing, kayaking, SUP, sailing, caving, abseiling and ghyll scrambling.
• Deliver Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and residential Gold programmes.
• Provide inclusive experiences for participants of varied abilities and backgrounds.
• Maintain safety standards, conduct risk assessments and manage equipment.
• Work flexible hours across a 7‑day programme.

Required profile

• Minimum three years’ experience in outdoor education or a similar sector.
• Experience working with schools, youth services and groups with disabilities.
• Qualifications: Mountain Leader Summer, Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI or equivalent), Power Boat L2, Level 1 Coach or Paddlesport Leader, 2‑day First Aid, full driving licence.
• Desirable: D1 licence (minibus), Local Cave Leader Level 1, DofE supervisor/assessor, RYA dinghy instructor, BC moderate water endorsement.

Required skills

• Canoeing, rafting, kayaking, stand‑up paddleboarding, sailing.
• Caving, abseiling, ghyll scrambling and local terrain knowledge (Humphrey Head, Cathedral Quarry, surrounding fells).
• First‑aid provision, boat handling and risk management.
• Group instruction and leadership.
