GIS Specialist

About the role

Waggoner Engineering, Inc. is seeking a GIS Specialist for its Birmingham or Huntsville, AL office. The role supports project managers and client account managers by delivering high‑quality GIS planning, design, and technical oversight within budget and schedule constraints.

Key responsibilities

• Create and maintain GIS databases, perform data analysis, and produce maps and graphics.
• Support engineering and environmental teams with GIS deliverables for transportation, water, wastewater, stormwater, site development, and environmental projects.
• Collect, process, and integrate survey, CAD, and field data into GIS platforms.
• Develop custom GIS tools, applications, and workflows to improve efficiency and visualization.
• Manage geospatial data from public and private sources and conduct spatial analysis for planning and decision‑making.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
• 5–10 years of experience in GIS roles; internship or project‑based experience considered.
• Strong problem‑solving abilities, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and related extensions).
• Familiarity with CAD software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation, and integrating CAD with GIS.
• Knowledge of GPS data collection tools and mobile GIS applications.
