HR & Payroll Manager (6‑month Fixed‑Term Contract)

About the role

We are partnering with a values‑oriented organisation seeking an experienced HR & Payroll Manager on a six‑month fixed‑term contract. The role sits within a larger HR team, leading the full employment lifecycle while overseeing accurate payroll delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage employee‑relations cases, including disciplinary, grievance and capability processes.
• Oversee absence management, ensuring consistent policy application and proactive manager support.
• Support and guide managers on performance‑management processes.
• Provide expert HR advice to stakeholders across the business.
• Maintain HR systems and employee records with accuracy and compliance.
• Oversee end‑to‑end monthly payroll processing through the Payroll Coordinator.
• Ensure payroll is delivered accurately, on time and in line with statutory requirements.
• Manage payroll queries and resolve issues efficiently.
• Ensure compliance with HMRC regulations and reporting requirements.
• Review, update and implement HR policies in line with current employment legislation.
• Support internal audits and continuous‑improvement initiatives.
• Line‑manage and develop the Payroll Coordinator, fostering a collaborative team culture.

Required profile

• Proven experience in an HR Manager or similar role with payroll oversight.
• Strong knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practices.
• Experience managing employee‑relations cases, absence and performance processes.
• Solid understanding of payroll processes and compliance obligations.
• Confident communicator able to influence and support stakeholders at all levels.
• Highly organised, detail‑oriented and able to manage multiple priorities.
• CIPD qualification (Level 5 or above).
