Inquests and Public Inquiries Lawyer

About the role

The Legists are seeking an Inquests and Public Inquiries Lawyer to join their team in Leeds. Working within the Government Legal Department framework, you will provide specialist legal advice on inquests and public inquiries that affect a wide range of government departments.

Key responsibilities

• Advise ministers, senior officials and departmental teams on legal issues arising from inquests and public inquiries.
• Prepare and review legal submissions, statements and reports for inquiry proceedings.
• Manage a caseload of inquest and inquiry matters, ensuring timely and accurate advice.
• Liaise with other legal professionals across government to coordinate strategy and response.
• Draft legal opinions, briefing notes and policy guidance related to inquiry outcomes.

Required profile

• A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.
• Strong analytical ability and strategic thinking applied to complex legal issues.
• Open‑minded, impartial and able to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, capable of explaining complex matters clearly.
