Island Nurse – Hoy (Band 6)

About the role

The Island Nurse will join a small health team delivering primary and community care to the residents of Hoy, an island of approximately 388 people. Working within the Orcades Practice, you will provide 24/7 nursing services, support local GPs and help reduce professional isolation through weekly virtual meetings. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop a broad range of generalist skills in a remote, rural setting.

Key responsibilities

• Assess, plan and monitor the health needs of the island population across the lifespan.
• Deliver community and practice nursing services, including health promotion, chronic disease management and urgent care.
• Collaborate with GPs, allied health professionals and the Scottish Ambulance Service to ensure seamless patient pathways.
• Participate in weekly Teams meetings to share knowledge and maintain peer support.
• Maintain accurate clinical records and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse at Band 6 level with solid clinical experience.
• Adaptable, resource‑ful and able to work autonomously without immediate hospital support.
• Committed to delivering high‑quality care in a remote, rural environment.
• Willing to reside on Hoy and manage rented accommodation independently.

Required skills

• Non‑medical prescribing qualification (essential).
