Materials Engineer

About the role

The Materials Engineer will support the Netherton Hub civil and energy infrastructure project near Peterhead, ensuring that all materials used meet the required specifications, standards and regulatory requirements. This position combines laboratory and on‑site testing with technical advice to maintain high quality and safety throughout the project.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct laboratory and site‑based testing of aggregates, soils, concrete and asphalt in line with UKAS accreditation and project specifications.
• Interpret test results and produce technical reports for project teams.
• Ensure compliance with Balfour Beatty’s quality management system, British Standards, IRR17 and Dangerous Goods Safety regulations.
• Advise engineers on material suitability, grading and performance, and assist in troubleshooting material‑related issues.
• Maintain accurate records of tests, calibrations and inspections; contribute to risk assessments and method statements.
• Collaborate closely with the Senior Materials Technician and site engineers, and provide updates in weekly project review meetings.

Required profile

• Experience in materials testing within a construction environment.
• Familiarity with UKAS‑accredited testing procedures and British Standards.
• Knowledge of environmental and safety regulations, including IRR17 and Dangerous Goods Safety.
• Ability to produce clear technical documentation and reports.
