People Director

About the role

As People Director you will lead the entire People and Culture function at Amber Labs, working directly with the CEO and COO to transition the business from a founder‑led, reactive model to a structured, accountable and scalable organisation. You will set the strategic direction, design the operating model and raise the standards for managing and developing talent.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deliver the People roadmap in partnership with senior leadership.
• Build and implement a performance management framework, improving manager capability.
• Develop retention and engagement strategies, benchmark rewards and create clear career pathways.
• Lead organisational design and workforce planning across permanent staff and contractors.
• Coach managers, close leadership gaps and raise the standard of people leadership.
• Ensure HR policies, processes and compliance (including IR35) are robust for a scaling business.
• Manage and develop the existing junior HR team.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a People Director or senior People leader in a scaling technology or professional services business.
• Track record of building People functions and improving performance culture.
• Confidence advising at CEO and board level with the ability to challenge and support.
• Experience managing blended workforces (permanent, contractors, FTCs) and knowledge of IR35.
• Comfortable operating in a fast‑moving organisation of 50‑200 employees.
