Principal Traffic Engineer

About the role

The Principal Traffic Engineer will join Bristol City Council’s City Transport service to lead the delivery of traffic engineering and transport projects across the city. This senior position combines technical expertise, project leadership and stakeholder engagement to improve traffic management and support Bristol’s sustainable travel ambitions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the planning, design and delivery of traffic engineering, traffic management and transport schemes.
• Provide specialist technical advice to councillors, senior managers, external partners and the public.
• Coordinate staff, contractors and consultants to ensure projects meet programme objectives, budgets and quality standards.
• Mentor and guide members of the Area Engineering team and act as deputy Team Manager when required.
• Represent the service in meetings, forums and partnership groups.

Required profile

• Significant experience in traffic engineering, transport or highway project delivery.
• Proven ability to manage competing priorities in a complex stakeholder environment.
• Strong project leadership with experience of budgeting and programme management.
• Excellent communication skills for conveying technical information to diverse audiences.
