Research Engineer

About the role

SMT is looking for a Research Engineer to join its Research & Development team in Nottingham. You will work on advancing SMT’s CAE software portfolio, particularly the MASTA platform, and help shape future engineering workflows.

Key responsibilities

• Research and prototype new applications for the MASTA software suite.
• Develop Python scripts that interact with MASTA via its API and implement new functionality directly into the platform.
• Collect, analyse and interpret data from simulation studies.
• Explore innovative CAE simulation methods for electric drivelines and related domains.
• Use commercial CAE and CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, ANSYS, MSC Adams) to support research activities.
• Create technical case studies, present at conferences and contribute to academic publications.
• Assist the software support team with client training sessions and technical support.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in a numerical science (2:1 or higher); PhD is a plus.
• Self‑motivated researcher with strong analytical and presentation skills.
• Team‑player able to build good working relationships.
• Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.

Required skills

• Python programming, including Pandas, Matplotlib and SciPy.
• Experience with APIs and software prototyping.
• Familiarity with C#/.NET (desirable).
• Knowledge of CAD/CAE tools such as SolidWorks, ANSYS and MSC Adams (desirable).
• Understanding of electric drivelines and related components (highly desirable).
