Stores Assistant – Laboratory Supplies

About the role

The Laboratory Stores Assistant will support the Public Health Microbiology team at Heartlands Hospital by managing consumables, equipment and stock levels. This role ensures that laboratory staff have the supplies they need while maintaining safety and accuracy in all transactions.

Key responsibilities

• Organise daily stock requirements and verify stock requests before issue.
• Maintain adequate consumable levels, minimise waste and control costs.
• Receive, document and distribute incoming supplies, including moderate lifting of items and gas cylinders.
• Support the laboratory stock control system and keep the stores area tidy and well‑stocked.
• Prepare, implement and follow Standard Operating Procedures for stores.
• Assist with incident initiation for replacement items and participate in quality assurance activities.
• Comply with UKHSA, UKAS accreditation standards and health‑and‑safety policies.

Required profile

• Strong accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to work on feet for most of the day and perform moderate manual handling.
• Good communication skills within the team and with managers.
• Willingness to follow SOPs and refer non‑routine issues to a supervisor.

Required skills

• Data entry proficiency.
• Computer skills for using stock control software and handling telephone enquiries.
