Systems Accountant – Finance Systems & Automation

About the role

This is a pivotal, full‑time position within a UK‑wide services business, based in Birmingham City Centre. You will own the finance technology landscape, driving system improvements, automation and responsible AI use while leading a small management accounts team.

Key responsibilities

• Take ownership of day‑to‑day operation of all finance systems, ensuring reliability and accuracy.
• Act as the primary liaison with the external technology partner, managing maintenance, issue resolution and future enhancements.
• Plan, test, roll‑out and communicate system upgrades and new finance solutions.
• Identify, design and implement automation and AI‑enabled tools such as workflow automation, intelligent reconciliation and advanced reporting.
• Oversee the production of accurate monthly management accounts and guide the management accounts team.
• Map end‑to‑end finance processes, pinpointing opportunities for standardisation, automation and AI.
• Maintain clear process documentation, system controls and data integrity across all finance sources.
• Support richer reporting and dashboards using AI‑supported analytics for forecasting and trend analysis.
• Provide user training, support and act as the go‑to contact for system queries.
• Ensure finance systems remain compliant, well‑controlled and audit‑ready.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading finance system improvements and upgrades.
• Experience overseeing a small management accounts team.
• Ability to work closely with senior finance leadership, such as a Director of Finance.
