1:1 Primary Teaching Assistant (Full‑Time)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced 1:1 Primary Teaching Assistant to support children with additional needs in early years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 settings across schools in Portsmouth. The role involves delivering personalised support to enable pupils to access the Early Years curriculum and develop social skills.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑to‑one support for pupils with speech and language communication needs.
• Adapt and modify learning materials to suit individual requirements.
• Use alternative communication methods such as Makaton or PECS.
• Assist pupils during lunchtime, break times and other scheduled activities.
• Collaborate closely with the class teacher, SEN coordinator and external professionals.
• Plan, review and contribute to Personal Education Plans.
• Attend relevant INSET training and follow all school policies.

Required profile

• Professional approach to school life and confidentiality.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Good literacy, numeracy and basic computing abilities.
• Experience working with primary‑aged children, especially those with SEN.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and show initiative.
• Caring, cheerful and conscientious disposition.

Required skills

• Makaton communication.
• PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System).
• Use of ICT resources to support SEN pupils.
• Basic computing for resource modification.
