1:1 Teaching Assistant for Year 1 Autistic Pupil

About the role

Prospero Teaching is seeking a dedicated 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 pupil with autism in a primary school in Colchester. The role starts ASAP and runs for the remainder of the summer term, providing tailored assistance to help the child engage with lessons, build confidence, and manage daily classroom routines.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver one‑to‑one support to the assigned pupil throughout the school day.
• Adapt learning activities to suit the pupil’s needs and promote active participation.
• Assist the pupil in developing confidence and independence in classroom tasks.
• Help manage the pupil’s day‑to‑day routine, including transitions and behaviour strategies.
• Collaborate with the classroom teacher and support staff to ensure consistent support.

Required profile

• Previous experience as a teaching assistant, preferably with special educational needs.
• Experience supporting children with autism is highly desirable.
• Patient, nurturing and adaptable approach to learning support.
• Minimum GCSE English and Maths grade C.
• Right to work in the UK.
• Enhanced DBS certificate with online update service (or willingness to obtain one).
• Two professional child‑related references.
