Accounts Assistant

About the role

Our client, a leading family‑owned transport business with over £80m turnover, is looking for an Accounts Assistant to join their finance team at the Preston head office. Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will gain exposure to both transactional accounting and month‑end processes while developing your career in a supportive environment.

Key responsibilities

• Support the month‑end close alongside the Assistant Management Accountant.
• Assist with accruals, pre‑payments and the preparation of monthly management accounts.
• Process purchase ledger and sales ledger transactions as required.
• Help with payroll administration and processing.
• Handle petty cash claims and reconcile company credit cards.
• Support VAT returns and related tax documentation.
• Maintain accurate financial records, filing systems and provide ad‑hoc finance team support.

Required profile

• Currently studying towards an AAT qualification.
• 1–2 years’ experience in an accounting or finance role.
• Experience with transactional finance processes such as purchase ledger, sales ledger or reconciliations.
• Strong attention to detail, organisational skills and a proactive attitude.
• Ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines and work effectively within a team.

Required skills

• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
• Familiarity with accounting software.
