Accounts Assistant – Payroll & VAT Support

About the role

We are seeking a proactive Accounts Assistant to support payroll processing, VAT returns and company secretarial duties for a well‑established client in Henley‑on‑Thames. The role combines finance administration with general office support and offers the chance to own the payroll function within a small, supportive team.

Key responsibilities

• Process weekly, fortnightly and monthly payrolls for 30‑40 employees, including data entry for starters, leavers, tax codes, pensions and statutory payments.
• Check timesheets, overtime and holiday pay calculations and submit accurate RTI information to HMRC.
• Administer auto‑enrolment and pension contributions and handle payroll‑related queries.
• Assist with VAT return preparation and filing.
• Perform company secretarial tasks such as confirmation statement filing, new company set‑up and filing forms with Companies House.
• Support bookkeeping and general accounts tasks.
• Provide administrative assistance to the payroll and accounts team, including handling inbound calls.

Required profile

• Previous experience in payroll processing and knowledge of UK PAYE, NIC and statutory payments.
• Familiarity with payroll software, preferably Sage Payroll.
• High level of accuracy, attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
