Acute Medicine Consultant – NHS Bristol

About the role

We are seeking a dynamic Acute Medicine Consultant to join the largest acute medical team in the South West at North Bristol NHS Trust. The role is full‑time (10 programmed activities) with flexibility for part‑time or job‑share arrangements. You will work in a high‑pressure Acute Medical Unit (AMU) that serves as the hub of the hospital, delivering timely, safe, and innovative patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Lead clinical care in the Acute Medical Triage area, receiving patients directly from the community.
• Manage the Enhance Care Unit, providing non‑invasive ventilation (NIV), high‑flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) and high‑level care.
• Oversee the short‑stay function and contribute to the same‑day emergency care (SDEC) service, seeing around 40 patients daily.
• Collaborate with the Acute Frailty Unit and multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe discharge and optimal length of stay.
• Drive transformational change, innovation, and service improvement across the AMU.

Required profile

• Full GMC registration and eligibility to work as a consultant in the NHS.
• Proven experience in acute medicine, preferably within a high‑volume AMU.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and lead multidisciplinary teams.
• Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement and innovative care pathways.

Required skills

• Expertise in acute medical triage and management.
• Proficiency with non‑invasive ventilation (NIV) and high‑flow nasal oxygen (HFNO).
• Experience in same‑day emergency care (SDEC) processes.
• Knowledge of acute frailty assessment and care.
