Advisory Lawyer for Government

About the role

The Government Legal Department is seeking a qualified legal professional to provide high‑level advisory services across a range of government departments. Working from London, you will advise ministers and senior officials on complex legal matters, contributing to policy development and legislative drafting.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and guidance to government departments on a variety of issues, including litigation, commercial, employment and EU legislation.
• Draft, review and interpret legislation and policy documents.
• Collaborate with ministers, departmental officials and other legal professionals to develop risk‑based solutions.
• Manage a caseload of advisory matters while maintaining high standards of service.
• Support the development of legal strategies that align with government objectives.

Required profile

• A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.
• Ability to think strategically and creatively about legal issues.
• Strong analytical judgement and the capacity to deliver balanced, risk‑based advice.
• Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex legal concepts clearly.
• Open‑minded, impartial and able to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.

Required skills

• Legal qualification (Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive).
