Alternative Provision Tutor – Outdoor Instructor (Ex‑Military)

About the role

We are looking for a resilient, structured individual to join our Alternative Provision (AP) team in Barnoldswick. This role blends classroom teaching with outdoor learning, helping secondary‑aged pupils who have struggled in mainstream education. No formal teaching qualification is required – life experience and an ex‑military background are highly valued.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver engaging, practical lessons inside the classroom and transition to outdoor projects, sports, or bushcraft.
• Mentor small groups and one‑to‑one learners, building confidence, structure and emotional regulation.
• Manage behaviour using a calm‑under‑pressure approach, supporting students with SEMH needs.
• Utilise the Lancashire natural environment to teach teamwork, resilience and life skills.

Required profile

• Armed Forces or similar disciplined background.
• Passion for the outdoors and ability to use it as an educational tool.
• Natural leader – firm, fair, patient and adaptable.
• Willingness to undergo safeguarding and trauma‑informed training.

Required skills

• Strong leadership and authority when working with groups.
• Excellent communication and mentoring abilities.
• Ability to de‑escalate challenging situations.
