Animal Welfare Assistant

About the role

Join the dedicated animal welfare team supporting Merseyside Police in Liverpool. As an Animal Welfare Assistant you will ensure the health, safety and comfort of the police stable’s horses and kennel’s dogs on a full‑time, temporary basis.

Key responsibilities

• Clean stables and kennels, prepare bedding and maintain a hygienic environment.
• Maintain equipment, yards and muck heaps to high cleanliness standards.
• Observe and report any signs of illness or distress; assist with medication and vital sign monitoring.
• Grit and clear yards to keep them ice‑free and safe for animals and staff.
• Secure all areas, manage alarm systems and supervise volunteers and visitors.
• Receive, unload and rotate feed and bedding deliveries, managing stock levels.

Required profile

• Experience caring for horses and dogs, including grooming, feeding and behaviour management.
• Physical fitness to handle large animals and perform demanding tasks.
• Strong attention to detail for health monitoring and safety checks.
• Excellent communication skills for interacting with colleagues, veterinary staff and the public.
• Flexibility to work shifts, including afternoons and nights.
• Minimum British Horse Association Stage 2 riding qualification.
• Clean full driving licence; LGV/HGV licence is a plus.
