Aspiring Child Counsellor – SEN Learning Support Assistant

About the role

This position is designed for recent or soon‑to‑be graduates who want hands‑on experience supporting children and young people with special educational needs (SEN). Working in a supportive, inclusive special school in East Grinstead, you will assist experienced staff and therapists in promoting emotional wellbeing, behaviour management and learning access.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support for pupils with SEN.
• Assist with emotional regulation, behaviour guidance and social development.
• Help implement individual learning and care plans.
• Observe, monitor and report on pupil progress and wellbeing.
• Contribute to a safe, nurturing and structured classroom environment.
• Deliver personal care where required.

Required profile

• A degree in Psychology, Criminology, Sociology or a related discipline.
• Genuine interest in child development, mental health or therapeutic practice.
• Empathy, patience and resilience.
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
• Proactive, reflective attitude and ability to commute to East Grinstead.

Required skills

• Empathy and active listening.
• Effective communication with children, families and multidisciplinary teams.
• Basic record‑keeping and observation reporting.
