Aspiring Speech & Language Therapist Teaching Assistant

About the role

This position offers recent graduates a hands‑on opportunity to work within a mainstream secondary school’s Speech, Communication and Language provision. You will support pupils with a range of needs, from speech and language difficulties to autism, while gaining experience that prepares you for postgraduate study or NHS roles.

Key responsibilities

• Assist specialist teachers, therapists and psychologists in delivering interventions such as Lego Therapy, Zones of Regulation and targeted speech‑language activities.
• Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support across Key Stages 3 to 5, both inside and outside the classroom.
• Help plan, prepare and implement individualized learning materials for pupils with communication and social‑emotional needs.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary staff to monitor progress and adapt strategies.

Required profile

• Recent graduate (1st or 2nd class honours) from any discipline; subject background is not a barrier.
• Strong A‑Levels and GCSEs, including English at GCSE.
• Demonstrated experience working with children or young people (e.g., tutoring, volunteering, nannying).
• Passionate about supporting learners with barriers to education and able to communicate calmly and confidently.

Required skills

• Effective verbal communication and active listening.
• Ability to build rapport with pupils and staff.
