Assessment Researcher – English Language Research & Impact

About the role

The British Council English Language Research and Impact (BCELRI) team is seeking an Assessment Researcher to lead and support research, development and validation of English language assessments, including IELTS. This senior‑level position will shape the Council’s global research agenda and ensure the highest academic standards across assessment products.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert, evidence‑based advice on assessment design, development and validation.
• Lead validation research projects and oversee their methodological rigour.
• Generate, publish and disseminate high‑quality research findings to internal and external stakeholders.
• Collaborate with the Head of Assessment Research, ELRI, English Programmes and international partners.
• Support BCELRI programmes, conferences and wider research activities.
• Contribute to the British Council’s thought‑leadership agenda through presentations and publications.

Required profile

• Established academic researcher with a strong publication record in language teaching, learning or assessment.
• Deep expertise in validation research, validity theory and assessment design.
• Proven ability to build collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders.
• Experience delivering research to professional and academic standards.
