Assistant Accountant – 12‑month Fixed‑Term (Maternity Cover)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Accountant to join a leading UK fuel supplier on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract covering maternity leave. The role is full‑time, office‑based in Hartlepool and offers the chance to work within a dynamic, forward‑thinking finance team.

Key responsibilities

• Daily posting and reconciliation of company payments and bank accounts, including petty cash and CID account drawdowns.
• Preparation and issuance of daily cash flash reports to senior management with commentary on large cash movements.
• Management of daily cash‑flow forecast and weekly payment run preparation for Financial Controller review.
• Reconciliation of bulk and third‑party supplier accounts, aged creditors review and customer refunds sign‑off.
• Maintenance of statement reconciliation tracker and monthly RDCO reporting.
• Preparation of customer satisfaction reports and marketing budget variance analysis for senior directors.
• Identify and implement efficiency, automation and AI opportunities within purchase ledger and credit control processes.

• Comfortable handling overflow credit‑control calls and customer queries.

Required skills

• Advanced Excel (pivot tables, SUM functions, etc.).
• Relevant accounting qualification such as AAT or QBE.
