Assistant Accountant

About the role

We are partnering with a fast‑growing organisation in Hertfordshire to hire an Assistant Accountant. This full‑time position will give you hands‑on exposure to the entire finance function, from day‑to‑day transaction processing to month‑end reporting and payroll support.

Key responsibilities

• Process accounts receivable, including invoice entry, credit control support and aged debtor reporting.
• Handle accounts payable tasks such as invoice processing, payment runs and supplier statement reconciliations.
• Assist with monthly payroll runs, ensuring accurate employee payments and maintaining payroll data.
• Support statutory payroll duties, including PAYE, NI, pension contributions and year‑end reporting.
• Contribute to month‑end close activities – journal entries, accruals, pre‑payments and reconciliations.
• Reconcile key balance‑sheet accounts, including bank, sales and purchase ledgers.
• Maintain accurate financial records and robust audit trails.
• Prepare VAT returns and ensure correct tax treatment of transactions.
• Help maintain finance systems, guaranteeing data accuracy and integrity.
• Support internal controls, compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
• Collaborate with internal teams to resolve financial queries and provide ad‑hoc reporting for management decisions.

Required profile

• AAT qualification (or working towards) or equivalent relevant experience.
• Experience in a finance or accounting role with exposure to transactional finance.
• Strong understanding of core finance processes such as AP, AR and reconciliations.
• Highly organised with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
• Proactive, adaptable and able to support a busy finance team.
