Assistant Gardener – Full‑time (Dartmouth)

About the role
Join the town’s dedicated gardening and grounds team as an Assistant Gardener. You will support a range of seasonal tasks that keep public green spaces attractive and safe for the community.
Key responsibilities
- Cut and maintain lawns using pedestrian‑operated machines, tractors, ride‑on mowers, strimmers and brush cutters.
- Prune hedges, shrubs, roses and climbers; maintain herbaceous borders through weeding, staking and replanting.
- Clear leaves, pick litter and upkeep garden features, including basic arboricultural work and woody waste chipping.
- Apply chemical sprays and fertilisers where required and follow COSHH guidelines.
- Assist with greenhouse and nursery duties such as seed sowing, watering, propagation and potting.
- Support new landscaping projects, green initiatives and occasional snow‑clearing or frost‑gritting tasks.
- Maintain tools and equipment in safe working order.
Required profile
- Interest in horticulture and a full driving licence (over 25 years old for insurance).
- Willingness to work weekends with time off in lieu and to wear required PPE.
- Ability to complete basic paperwork and undertake training for NVQ Level 2 or related qualifications.
- Physical resilience and capacity to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Required skills
- Operation of mowers, tractors, brush cutters and strimmers.
- Basic pesticide and fertiliser application.
- Basic IT usage for daily tasks.
