Assistant IT Manager – Education Sector (Bolton)

About the role

We are recruiting an Assistant IT Manager for a growing education organisation in Bolton. The role combines hands‑on technical support with team leadership across multiple school sites, ensuring staff and students benefit from secure, reliable and innovative technology solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Support the IT Manager in delivering ICT services across several education sites.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to on‑site IT Support Technicians.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware, software and networking issues.
• Maintain Windows Server environments, Active Directory and Microsoft 365 services.
• Install, configure and maintain network infrastructure, including switches, wireless networks and firewalls.
• Lead device deployments, upgrades and lifecycle management.
• Monitor system performance and implement improvements for reliability and security.
• Support planning and delivery of IT projects across multiple locations.
• Ensure backup procedures, disaster recovery processes and cyber‑security standards are upheld.
• Build strong relationships with school leaders and staff, providing excellent customer service and technical advice.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation, asset registers and operational procedures.

Required profile

• Strong technical knowledge combined with excellent organisational and communication skills.
• Experience supporting Microsoft Windows Server environments.
• Experience with Microsoft 365 administration and Active Directory/Group Policy management.
• Experience in network administration, including TCP/IP, switching and wireless technologies.
• Familiarity with virtualisation technologies and endpoint management.
• Hands‑on hardware support for desktops, laptops and mobile devices.
• Experience leading or mentoring an IT support team.
