Assistant Payroll Manager

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Assistant Payroll Manager to join a busy payroll team in Central London. This permanent, hybrid position will support the end‑to‑end monthly payroll for over 5,000 employees, ensuring accurate and timely payments.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the full payroll cycle using the Midland i‑Trent system, including salaries, bonuses, overtime, commissions and deductions.
• Process BACS payments, FPS & EPS submissions and handle statutory reporting to HMRC (RTI).
• Calculate and remit Tax & NI, pension contributions (LGPS, TPS and complex schemes) and other deductions such as student loans.
• Maintain accurate employee data, reconcile payroll accounts and produce monthly reports for finance and senior leadership.
• Supervise, mentor and train payroll team members, allocate workload and ensure deadlines are met.
• Support internal and external audits, maintain audit trails and implement system upgrades or process improvements.

Required profile

• Strong attention to detail with the ability to spot and prevent payroll errors.
• Solid understanding of UK payroll legislation, tax laws and statutory requirements.
• Proven experience managing and developing payroll staff.
• Excellent communication skills for explaining payroll matters to employees and stakeholders.
• Ability to handle sensitive financial and personal data responsibly.
