Assistant SENCO

About the role

The Assistant SENCO will support the Special Educational Needs Coordinator in delivering high‑quality provision for pupils with SEND at Caldew Lea Primary School. Working 13 hours per week across Monday and Friday, the role is fixed‑term until August 2027 and forms part of the Cumbria Education Trust’s commitment to inclusive education.

Key responsibilities

• Provide targeted support to small groups of pupils with SEND, monitoring progress and evidencing improvements in achievement.
• Collaborate with teachers to plan, resource and deliver differentiated interventions across the curriculum.
• Deliver whole‑class teaching and cover for staff absence or PPA as required.
• Maintain safeguarding records and ensure compliance with statutory frameworks and school policies.
• Contribute to the development and review of SEND policies, codes of practice and the national curriculum implementation.

Required profile

• HLTA accredited status or Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
• Strong understanding of child development, learning processes and SEND legislation.
• Experience working with primary‑age children in a classroom setting.
• Demonstrated ability to work with staff to design and evaluate high‑quality interventions.
• Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and statutory frameworks related to SEND.

Required skills

• Full working knowledge of relevant SEND policies, codes of practice and legislation.
• Working knowledge of the national curriculum and associated learning programmes.
• Understanding of maths and English frameworks for primary education.
