Assistant Team Manager - Assessment

About the role

Our client, Oxfordshire County Council, is seeking an Assistant Team Manager to support the Assessment Team delivering high‑quality child protection and child‑in‑need services. You will work closely with the Team Manager to ensure statutory deadlines are met and that casework meets rigorous standards.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Team Manager in leading a team of 3‑6 social workers.
• Supervise, coach and manage performance of team members.
• Ensure assessments are completed within statutory timescales and maintain quality.
• Oversee complex child protection, child‑in‑need and looked‑after children cases.
• Make threshold decisions and provide management oversight on referrals and assessments.
• Chair strategy, child protection, planning and professional meetings as required.
• Promote relationship‑based, strengths‑based and restorative practice.
• Monitor team performance, conduct quality assurance and audit casework.
• Deputise for the Team Manager during absences.
• Collaborate with partner agencies to improve outcomes for children and families.

Required profile

• Experience in social work, preferably within child protection or assessment.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise and develop a small team.
• Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and safeguarding procedures.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet statutory deadlines.
