Assistant Team Manager - Care leavers

About the role

The Assistant Team Manager will support Wokingham Borough Council’s Care Leavers team, leading a group of social workers and personal advisors. This role ensures high‑quality, child‑centred practice while meeting statutory requirements and the Family First agenda.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage a Children’s Services social work/personal advisor team, ensuring compliance with legislation and policy.
• Drive continuous improvement in safeguarding, care planning and service delivery through effective supervision and partnership working.
• Provide professional supervision and guidance to personal advisors and social workers, supporting case management and decision‑making.
• Monitor practice quality, conduct risk assessments and ensure robust safeguarding interventions.
• Allocate workload, manage team performance and support staff development through coaching and training.
• Collaborate with multi‑agency partners to deliver integrated services for children, including asylum seekers and care leavers.
• Contribute to service development, audits and quality‑improvement plans.

Required profile

• Substantial post‑qualification experience in children’s social work and safeguarding.
• Proven experience managing team performance.
• Commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity and corporate parenting principles.
• Desirable: CPD qualification in Leadership & Management and experience managing budgets.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of relevant legislation and safeguarding practice.
• Understanding of relationship‑based social care.
• Experience with strategic planning and resource management (desirable).
