Associate Publisher – Open Access Clinical Medicine

About the role

The BMC Academic Journals group seeks an Associate Publisher to manage a portfolio of open access journals within the clinical medicine portfolio. Reporting to an Executive Publisher, you will be responsible for strategic development, day‑to‑day management and the success of individual journals, working closely with internal staff, external editors and the scientific community.

Key responsibilities

• Drive results through portfolio development and management while demonstrating accountability.
• Develop and implement annual growth plans for open access journals and explore business development opportunities.
• Manage annual targets for submissions, publications, transfers and turnaround times.
• Deliver best‑in‑class author experience and engage Editors‑in‑Chief, Editorial Board Members and societies.
• Navigate a fast‑paced environment, adapt to changing priorities and resolve pre‑ and post‑publication issues.
• Gather and synthesize data to support data‑driven decision‑making and strategic planning.
• Negotiate contracts using knowledge of profit & loss statements and forecasting.
• Build strong relationships with colleagues, researchers and external editors, and stay informed on market intelligence.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (preferably in life, biomedical or health sciences) or equivalent.
• Resourceful, proactive problem‑solver with the ability to adapt quickly to change.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Persuasion and influencing abilities, demonstrating diplomacy and assertiveness when needed.
• Team‑oriented with the capacity to work independently and take ownership of tasks.
• Strong time‑management and organisational skills, meeting deadlines consistently.
• Experience building productive relationships with academic and industry researchers.
• Strong technical aptitude with keen attention to detail.
• Willingness to travel occasionally for the role.
