Backend Product Engineer
Yonder · London
Job description
About the role
Yonder is looking for a Backend Product Engineer to join its small engineering team in London. You will work on the systems behind every membership: what happens when a member taps their card, the in-house core banking platform and the rewards engine. The team owns the full development lifecycle, system architecture and infrastructure, and the engineer is encouraged to contribute wherever the problem lies, such as infrastructure, the mobile app or the webapp.
Key responsibilities
- Build production-grade backend services for payments, core banking and rewards
- Build event-driven features with Kafka and integrate with internal services and external partners
- Ship features end to end, from concept to live deployment, with measurable member impact
- Contribute to the architecture of distributed microservices, focusing on resilience, scalability and maintainability
- Design APIs and data flows that work cleanly with the mobile app
- Take part in lightweight architecture reviews
- Monitor, troubleshoot and improve services in production
- Work on cloud infrastructure, containerised workloads and CI/CD pipelines
- Apply good practice for reliability, observability and security
- Collaborate with product and design, pair with engineers, review code and help raise the team's technical bar
Required profile
- Backend experience in production, ideally in a JVM language (Java, Kotlin, Scala)
- Curiosity about functional programming; no Scala experience needed, as it will be taught
- Experience with event-driven systems such as Kafka
- Comfortable building and operating microservices
- Owns quality, sees automated testing as part of building
- Uses AI coding tools and applies judgement to their output
- Focuses on solving member problems, is comfortable with ambiguity and takes ownership in a fast-paced startup
Required skills
- Scala microservices on the Typelevel ecosystem (Http4s, Cats Effect)
- Data and messaging: AlloyDB (Postgres), managed Kafka
- Infrastructure: GCP, GKE (Kubernetes), Docker
- Frontend: React Native mobile app, Next.js webapp
What we offer
- Salary of 53,578 to 73,163 GBP depending on experience, plus 34,064 to 60,994 GBP in stock options
- 35 holidays (27 days annual leave plus 8 days public leave)
- Private healthcare with Bupa
- Up to 12 weeks enhanced parental leave after 1 year
- Learning and training allowance of 750 GBP per year
- Team breakfasts, lunch and events, cycle-to-work scheme, and learning allowance
- Office-first, remote-friendly: at least 3 days a week in the Brick Lane office, with everyone coming in on Mondays
