Behaviour Support Assistant – Primary School (St Helens)

About the role

We are looking for a Behaviour Support Assistant to work one‑to‑one with a Key Stage 1 pupil who is being assessed for autism. The role is based in a welcoming primary school in St Helens and runs Monday‑Friday, 8:45 am‑3:30 pm.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑to‑one support for the pupil throughout the school day.
• Build a positive, trusting relationship to encourage engagement in learning.
• Implement tailored support plans and de‑escalate challenging behaviour.
• Identify triggers and work with staff to create consistent strategies.
• Collaborate closely with the class teacher, SENCo and wider school team.
• Record observations and contribute to the pupil’s progress monitoring.

Required profile

• Minimum Level 2 qualification in a relevant area (e.g., Supporting Teaching and Learning, Childcare, Health and Social Care).
• Previous experience supporting children with behavioural, social, emotional or additional learning needs.
• Confidence in managing and de‑escalating challenging behaviour calmly and professionally.
• Child Workforce DBS registration on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
