Behaviour Support Mentor – 1:1 SEMH Support in Secondary School

About the role

This temporary full‑time position is based in a secondary school in Middleton, Rochdale. The Behaviour Support Mentor will work one‑to‑one with a pupil who has Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and displays challenging behaviour, helping them to engage positively with learning.

Key responsibilities

• Provide consistent 1:1 mentoring and emotional support throughout the school day.
• Implement and monitor behaviour support plans under the guidance of the SENCO and Behaviour Lead.
• Use de‑escalation and restorative approaches to manage challenging situations.
• Build trusting relationships that promote self‑confidence and emotional regulation.
• Liaise regularly with teachers, pastoral staff and parents/carers to ensure clear communication and track progress.

Required profile

• Proven experience working in a school or educational setting.
• Background supporting young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour.
• Resilience, patience and a calm, nurturing approach.
• Experience in Alternative Provision (AP) or Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) is highly desirable.
• Relevant behaviour management training such as Team Teach is advantageous.
