Biomedical Scientist (Specialist) – Band 6

About the role

The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced HCPC‑registered Biomedical Scientist or Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join its modern laboratory within Derbyshire Pathology. This Band 6 position supports microbiology sample processing and analytical investigations across multiple sites.

Key responsibilities

• Perform day‑to‑day sample processing and analytical clinical investigations for Microbiology, meeting timeliness and quality standards.
• Supervise and mentor Band 5 Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs) within the work area.
• Participate in on‑call and weekend rotas, ensuring 24‑hour laboratory coverage.
• Engage in staff training, audit activities, and adherence to ISO 15189 and Health & Safety requirements.
• Contribute to service transformation initiatives to improve delivery.

Required profile

• HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
• Completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma (or within a few months of completion).
• Experience supervising junior laboratory staff.
• Willingness to work rotational weekends and on‑call duties.

Required skills

• Microbiology laboratory techniques.
• Knowledge of ISO 15189 standards.
• Health & Safety compliance in a clinical laboratory.
• Laboratory sample processing and analytical investigation.
