Branch Manager – Building Merchant

About the role

We are partnering with an established independent building merchant to find a Branch Manager who will oversee the day‑to‑day operations of a busy, trade‑focused branch in East Sussex. This hands‑on leadership position works closely with senior management to drive sales, support staff, and deliver exceptional service to both trade and retail customers.

Key responsibilities

• Support the day‑to‑day management and commercial performance of the branch.
• Drive sales growth through excellent customer service and account development.
• Lead, motivate and coach the branch team, maintaining high standards across the counter, office and yard.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective trade customers.
• Assist with stock management, pricing, purchasing and supplier relationships.
• Ensure health & safety, compliance and operational standards are upheld.
• Support branch reporting, profitability analysis and overall performance.

Required profile

• Previous supervisory or management experience within a builders' merchant, building supplies, trade distribution or a similar sector.
• Strong commercial mindset with the ability to identify sales opportunities.
• Excellent leadership and communication abilities.
• Hands‑on approach, willing to engage in all areas of branch operations.
• Proven experience developing customer relationships and delivering high‑quality service.
• Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise effectively.
