BSL Support Worker – Supporting Deaf Students

About the role

We are looking for a dedicated BSL Support Worker to join our welcoming school in Chelmsford. You will use your British Sign Language skills to help deaf and hearing‑impaired students access lessons, communicate with staff and participate fully in school life. This full‑time position offers the chance to make a genuine difference to young learners.

Key responsibilities

• Provide BSL communication support to deaf and hearing‑impaired students throughout the school day.
• Assist students in accessing classroom activities, lessons and wider school opportunities.
• Work alongside teachers to create an inclusive and accessible learning environment.
• Build positive, trusting relationships with students and encourage their independence and confidence.
• Adapt communication methods to meet individual student needs and maintain professional communication with staff and families.

Required profile

• Patient, approachable and passionate about helping young people overcome learning barriers.
• Strong communication skills with a calm, supportive approach.
• Ability to build positive relationships with students, teachers and families.
• Minimum Level 2 BSL qualification and confidence using BSL in an educational setting.
• Experience supporting deaf, SEN or additional‑needs students is advantageous.
