Building Services Technician (Fixed Term)

About the role

A short-term opportunity has arisen for a versatile Building Services Technician to join the facilities team of the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience. The post holder provides day-to-day maintenance across two buildings containing laboratories, classrooms, offices and lecture theatres, supporting planned and reactive maintenance so that the buildings remain safe, legal and compliant. The funds for this post are available for 6 months.

Key responsibilities

• General maintenance of the building fabric, including painting, minor carpentry, installation of benching and flooring, and work that may be part of a lab refurbishment or room remodelling, including stripping out and some carpentry.
• Replacement of gas cylinders and portering.
• Routine daily building checks under the supervision of the Deputy Facilities Manager and Facilities and Operations Manager, covering plant and boiler rooms, fire alarm panels and emergency lighting, and reporting faults promptly.
• Construction of bespoke benching, racking and shelving to specification.
• Emergency response to situations such as flooding, followed by rectification or arranging a third party to fix it.
• Liaising with Estate Management and third-party contractors about the nature and location of problems.

Required profile

• Experience in a maintenance role.
• Experience in a university or laboratory environment is advantageous.
• Good organisational and prioritising skills, and excellent problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
• Flexible working approach, with good interpersonal, team-working and customer service skills.
