Building Surveyor (Interim)

About the role

Goodman Masson is working with a social housing organisation in Surrey to recruit an interim Building Surveyor. The role sits within the council’s property team, reporting to the Building Services & Facilities Manager, and involves delivering a varied portfolio of building projects, compliance activities and planned maintenance across the operational and residential estate.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver building surveying services across the council’s operational and residential property portfolio.
• Manage planned maintenance and capital works projects, including roof replacement programmes and refurbishment schemes.
• Support a civil engineering project involving river‑bank sheet piling, ensuring safety and contract compliance.
• Carry out property inspections, condition surveys and defect diagnosis, including investigation of damp and moisture ingress.
• Assess properties for conversion to temporary accommodation and develop business cases.
• Manage contractors, consultants and suppliers to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget and to quality standards.
• Produce technical specifications using NBS Chorus and prepare contract documentation using JCT and NEC forms.
• Monitor contractor performance, conduct site inspections and ensure statutory compliance, including fire safety and mechanical/electrical programmes.

Required profile

• Experienced Building Surveyor with a background in local authority or social housing environments.
• Ability to work independently within a close‑knit team and liaise with internal stakeholders and external contractors.
• Strong understanding of fire safety, building compliance and planned maintenance processes.
