Cemetery Operative

About the role

The Cemetery Operative will work on a full‑time temporary basis at Sutton New Hall Cemetery and other sites across Birmingham. You will join a team delivering high‑quality services to bereaved families and associated agencies, handling grave preparation, back‑filling and general grounds duties.

Key responsibilities

• Excavate, shore and prepare graves for interment, including placement of artificial grass mats, lower ropes and stretchers.
• Back‑fill graves after interment and tidy the surrounding area.
• Carry out non‑contracted cemetery grounds maintenance tasks as outlined in the relevant document.
• Lock and unlock cemetery gates and report any security concerns to the Cemetery Foreperson or Bereavement Officer.
• Operate a range of vehicles and equipment, including vans, tractors, mini‑tractors, trailer dumpers, excavators and road sweepers.

Required profile

• Ability to work as part of a team delivering respectful service to the bereaved.
• Physical fitness for manual handling and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Reliability in following security procedures and reporting issues promptly.

• Operation of Trailer dumpers.

• Operation of Road sweepers.
