Commercial Underwriter

About the role

We are seeking a Commercial Underwriter to manage a high volume of Commercial Combined/SME insurance enquiries. You will work autonomously after training, interpreting policy wordings, pricing premiums and contributing to the company’s underwriting targets.

Key responsibilities

• Underwrite commercial combined/SME risks with premiums ranging from £3,000 to £100,000.
• Meet and exceed broker service level expectations.
• Identify cover and hazards that affect acceptance, pricing, or terms.
• Consider claims history and risk management when reviewing cases.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and internal partners.
• Support sales campaigns to acquire profitable business.
• Maintain market awareness and comply with legal, regulatory and contractual requirements.
• Operate within individual underwriting authorities and guidelines.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years’ experience in commercial underwriting.
• Preferably CII Certificate C (or part‑qualified).
• Proven ability to determine policy terms and calculate premiums within authority limits.
• Demonstrated contribution to loss‑ratio control and adherence to underwriting controls.
• Self‑motivated, able to work autonomously and drive business objectives.
• Experience with high‑risk or hard‑to‑place business is a plus, not mandatory.
