Communications Data Investigator

About the role
Join West Midlands Police as a Communications Data Investigator on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract. Working from the headquarters in Birmingham, you will support public safety by acquiring lawful communications data from telecom and postal operators.
Key responsibilities
- Provide expert advice on lawful data acquisition under the Investigatory Powers Act 2016.
- Assess threats, risks and harms in investigations, including homicide and counter‑terrorism incidents.
- Review and progress communications‑data applications through the departmental workflow system.
- Deliver training and presentations to staff and officers.
- Collaborate with the communications industry to explore data exploitation opportunities.
- Respond immediately to urgent incidents and plan workloads across multiple investigations.
- Ensure compliance with the IPA and Data Protection legislation while maintaining professional integrity.
Required profile
- Solid understanding of telephony, internet and social‑media communications.
- Proven computer literacy and strong written and verbal communication.
- Experience in risk assessment and decision‑making in high‑pressure environments.
- Willingness to learn evolving technologies and data interpretation methods.
- Desirable: College of Policing Communications Data Investigator accreditation and knowledge of the IPA 2016.
