Consultant Surgeon – NHS Highland, Fort William

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Consultant Surgeon to join NHS Highland at the Belford Hospital in Fort William. The role will support the development of a new 32‑bed inpatient facility and contribute to high‑quality surgical care for the local community.

Key responsibilities

• Provide general surgical services across acute, mixed and rehabilitation wards.
• Manage admissions through the Combined Assessment Unit and support the high‑dependency unit, including short‑term ventilation.
• Collaborate with specialist networks across the Highlands to develop subspecialty interests.
• Teach and mentor specialist nurses, junior doctors, and medical students.
• Participate in the planning and operational set‑up of the new hospital facility.

Required profile

• Broad experience in general surgery with strong communication and problem‑solving abilities.
• Registered on the GMC Specialist Register with a licence to practice, or within six months of obtaining a CCT in General Medicine.
• Willingness to work flexibly, including part‑time or adaptable job plans.
