Controls Engineer – PLC/Automation (On‑Site)

About the role

Our client, a leading engineering and automation specialist, is looking for a Controls Engineer to join their on‑site team in Gloucester. You will work across the full project lifecycle, from concept and development through to commissioning and ongoing customer support.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and modify PLC, HMI, and motion‑control programs.
• Configure and integrate software and hardware for networked control systems with distributed I/O.
• Program and integrate vision systems for inspection and measurement (e.g., Cognex).
• Provide control‑system support for prototype machines, new builds and existing equipment.
• Ensure machine safety compliance with international standards.
• Prepare documentation for manufacture, testing and customer handover.
• Support customers on‑site during commissioning, troubleshooting and fault finding.
• Identify and implement improvements to processes, productivity and quality.
• Contribute to product development and continuous‑improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• HNC/HND or equivalent in software, controls or automation.
• Proven experience in PLC, HMI and motion‑control programming.
• Willingness to travel internationally (4‑5 trips per year, 2‑3 weeks each) and a valid passport.
• Strong communication skills and a proactive, solution‑focused attitude.

Required skills

• Rockwell Automation platforms – Logix, Safety PLCs, Kinetix, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View ME.
• Siemens TIA Portal (advantageous).
• Machine‑vision systems (Cognex or similar).
• Robotic applications – Yaskawa (preferred).
• Control‑system architecture and automation principles.
