Corporate Debt Assistant – Council

About the role

This permanent position supports the Council’s Corporate Debt Team in Medway, helping residents manage and repay outstanding council tax, business rates, housing benefit over‑payments and other debts. The role offers hybrid working and the chance to develop strong financial and customer‑service expertise.

Key responsibilities

• Recover outstanding council debts, including council tax, business rates and housing benefit over‑payments.
• Manage arrears cases from the Liability Order stage, deciding on appropriate recovery actions.
• Work directly with residents to set realistic repayment plans and provide guidance.
• Handle enquiries via phone, email and face‑to‑face meetings, including virtual sessions.
• Identify vulnerable residents and refer them to appropriate support services.
• Attend Liability Order court hearings and respond to related queries.
• Monitor accounts and make informed decisions on next recovery steps.

Required profile

• Experience in financial services or a similar environment.
• Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
• High accuracy and attention to detail.
• Proactive, organised and confident in decision‑making.
